Raphael first appears in season 5 ' Free to be you and me', not much is known of him at the moment except he supposedly went AWOL after the last war and maybe the only one who knows where God is. It is for this reason Castiel is said to begin a quest of sorts to find him. Raphael is also one of the only four angels who has actualy seen God meaning he was very high up in the celestial hierarchy.
It was stated that Raphael is Chuck's Archangel, who killed Castiel in "Lucifer Rising". As an archangel, Raphael has immense powers. In the episode Free to Be You and Me Dean remarked that his and Castiel's attempt to trap the angel in order to interrogate him was like "trying to catch a hurricane with a butterfly net", to which Castiel said no, it was harder. When Raphael did "touch down" his power blacked out the eastern seaboard. Raphael goes on to threatening Castiel with death - despite his 'unending mercy', Castiel replies that he would not dare as God was the one who brought him back, and would punish Raphael for killing him. Raphael states however that Lucifer may have been the one to resurrect Castiel rather than God as "he needs all the rebel angels he can get". He also threatens Dean with something "imaginative" to force him into allowing himself as Michael's vessel. However Dean states they knew he was coming, and traps Raphael in a ring of burning holy oil for interrogation. When questioned about the whereabouts of God , Raphael states that "God is dead", as that is the only possible reason for his 'abandonment' of the angels and the humans, leaving both races without orders or guidance. Disheartened by God's desertion, Raphael states that the angels started the Apocalypse, in order to defeat Lucifer and create paradise. When Dean and Castiel turn to leave Raphael demands to be released, when Castiel refuses, Raphael swears vengance on him.
In biblical law Raphael is a healer, and the writers of Supernatural have said this will carry over to the series. Also, in biblical law, he defeated Azazel and bound him under a desert, but it is unknown if this will be mentioned in the series.

As an archangel Raphael holds incredible power and influence over the other angels. the extent of his powers are unknown , but it is likely he will posses some god-like powers, like Michael and Lucifer posses - but to a lesser degree than them.

In the Bible (biblical teachings) Raphael sent Azazel to a desert. Azazel stated something similar to that statement in this show, he said that he felt as if he has been lost in a desert wondering; searching for Lucifer. This statement was made by Azazel in Lucifer Rising.
